1. Who We Are
CoinScholar ("we," "our," or "us") is the developer and publisher of the CoinScholar iOS application. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at support@coinscholar.app.
2. Information We Collect
We collect only what is necessary to provide the CoinScholar service.
Information you provide
- Account information: Your email address and full name when you create an account, or the information provided by Apple or Google if you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.
- Collection data: Coin names, years, countries, grades, conditions, purchase prices, purchase dates, notes, and storage location details that you enter for coins in your collection.
- Coin images: Photos you capture using the in-app camera when scanning coins. These images are uploaded to our secure cloud storage and associated with your account.
Information collected automatically
- Device token: A push notification token generated by your device and Apple's Push Notification service, used solely to send you price alerts and weekly digest notifications that you have enabled.
- Usage data: Scan counts and the date of your last monthly scan reset, used to enforce your subscription tier's scan limits.
- Subscription status: Your current subscription tier (Free, Silver, or Gold), managed by RevenueCat and Apple's StoreKit, including purchase and renewal history.
- Last explore date: The timestamp of your most recent use of the Recommendations feature, used to enforce the 1-hour rate limit and prevent abuse.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect precise GPS location, browsing history, contacts, health data, financial account information, or any data not described in this policy. We do not use your data for advertising or sell it to any third party.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To create and maintain your account and authenticate your identity
- To provide AI-powered coin identification using your submitted images
- To store, display, and manage your coin collection
- To calculate and display your portfolio value
- To send push notifications for price alerts and weekly digests you have enabled
- To manage your subscription and enforce tier-based feature limits
- To personalise market recommendations based on your stated collecting interests
- To respond to your support requests
4. Third-Party Services
CoinScholar uses the following third-party services to provide its features. Each has its own privacy policy governing its use of data.
Supabase
We use Supabase (supabase.com) for database storage, user authentication, and secure file storage. Your account data, collection data, and coin images are stored on Supabase infrastructure with row-level security enforcing that only you can access your own data. Supabase servers are located in the United States.
Anthropic Claude API
Coin images you submit for identification are sent to Anthropic's Claude API (anthropic.com) for AI-powered analysis. Images are transmitted securely and used solely for the purpose of identifying the coin in the image. Please review Anthropic's privacy policy for details on how API inputs are handled.
Google Cloud Vision API
In some cases, coin images may also be processed by Google Cloud Vision API (cloud.google.com) as a secondary identification step. Images are transmitted securely and used only for coin identification.
RevenueCat
Subscription purchases, renewals, and entitlements are managed through RevenueCat (revenuecat.com) in conjunction with Apple's StoreKit 2. RevenueCat receives your anonymous Apple subscriber ID and subscription status. RevenueCat does not receive your email address or collection data.
Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) and Expo
Push notifications are delivered via Apple's Push Notification Service and Expo's notification infrastructure (expo.dev). Your device push token is stored securely and used only to deliver notifications you have enabled. Notification delivery data is not used for marketing or analytics.
Numista API and Coinoscope API
Coin identification may reference the Numista coin database (numista.com) and Coinoscope image matching service. Only coin image data is sent, and no personal account data is shared with these services.
Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google, your Google account name and email address are shared with CoinScholar solely for account creation and authentication. No other Google account data is accessed.
5. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account through the app, all of your data — including your collection, portfolio history, scan history, coin images, price alerts, watchlist, and notification preferences — is permanently and immediately deleted from our systems. This deletion is irreversible.
Subscription transaction records may be retained by Apple and RevenueCat according to their respective policies.
6. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including:
- All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using TLS/HTTPS
- Authentication tokens are stored on your device using iOS Secure Enclave storage (Expo SecureStore), not standard device storage
- Database access is governed by row-level security policies — no query can access another user's data
- Coin images are stored in a protected cloud storage bucket
- API keys and service credentials are never included in the app binary
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: View all data associated with your account within the app
- Correction: Edit any coin data, notes, or account information at any time
- Deletion: Permanently delete your account and all associated data from Profile → Delete Account
- Notification control: Enable or disable specific push notifications from Profile → Notification Settings
- Data portability: Export your collection as a CSV file (Gold tier) from the Collection tab
For any privacy requests not covered by the above in-app controls, contact us at support@coinscholar.app.
8. Children's Privacy
CoinScholar is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided personal information, we will delete it promptly. If you believe your child has provided such information, please contact us.
9. International Users
CoinScholar is operated from the United States. If you access the app from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. By using CoinScholar, you consent to this transfer.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will notify you via a push notification or in-app message. Continued use of CoinScholar after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
